Marilene Ribeiro [ she | her ] is an award-winning visual artist, researcher and activist from Brazil.
Her projects are engaged in the political agency of photography, and practice focused on the environmental and the Human Rights agendas, with a decolonial gaze from the Global South.
Named on the PhMuseum as one of the 12 women photographers to watch worldwide, she has works vastly exhibited internationally and articles featuring her works published on platforms such as The Guardian, LensCulture, Photoworks, VIST Projects, The Royal Photographic Society Journal, Viens Voir, and Luna Cornea.
Ribeiro has been nominated for the Prix Pictet, the
also been awarded the Earth Photo-Photoworks Award, the PHotoEspaña Discoveries Award, the Pictures of the Year Latin America/POY Latam Carolina Hidalgo Vivar Photography Award, the Royal Photographic Society Awards, and the National Arts Foundation Marc Ferrez Photography Prize. She has also been shortlisted for Les Rencontres de la Photographie d’Arles Photobook Award, the Marilyn Stafford FotoReportage Award, and the Pierre Verger Photography Prize, amongst others.
She was trained by Magnum Photos, the Central Saint Martins of the University of the Arts London (UK), and the Fine Art School at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (Brazil). She holds a MSc in Ecology and Wildlife Conservation & Management, and PhD in Creative Arts/Photography. Ribeiro is a member of 'Foto Féminas' and a collaborator of ‘Fast Forward: Women in Photography’ and the 'Latin America Bureau’.
